Motorola supports Parikrma's 360? development program for the under-served children
Donates a library and a three seater vehicle

Bangalore March 17, 2005: Mohan Kumar, Vice President & General Manager, Mobile Devices Software, Motorola India, today inaugurated a library for the under-served children at the Parikrma Centre for Learning, Jayanagar. The library has been set up by the Parikrma Humanity Foundation with the funds donated by Motorola India. The library would be a high quality resource center in providing valuable books and resource material to the slum and street children of Bangalore.

Motorola also donated a 3 seater vehicle that will be used to transport goods and material across the three Parikrma Centres. The driver of the vehicle, an employee of Parikrma, is from the community the children come from. This is at the heart of Parikrma's philosophy of integrating the community into its programs.

At the inauguration of the library, Mohan Kumar said,"as a company, Motorola encourages its employees to participate in social activities. With Parikrma, we have found the right partner to channel our resources towards community development programmes".

Mr. Sammy Sana, MD, Global Software Group - India said, "Parikrma's initiative for slum & street children aligns well with our focus on learning and education as a theme for our community involvement. We are extremely happy to be associated with Parikrma."

Parikrma's uniqueness lies in its 360? development program that integrates the community with its core operation of managing high quality education centres for the slum and street children of Bangalore. The education provided follows the ICSE curriculum and the language of instruction is English. A key feature of the program is the Circle of Life. There are four areas that complete this Circle for any child - Education, Healthcare, Nutrition and Family Care. Parikrma manages all these areas and works closely with each family to ensure stability of homes and a nurturing environment. Thus far Parikrma has provided vocational training for older siblings, AIDS awareness programs, de-addiction programs for alcoholic fathers and women's empowerment programs. Many of the children's parents also work with Parikrma.

This Parikrma Model has already shown success. Attendance was at 98% while drop outs were lesser than 1%. In fact parent-teacher meetings have shown an attendance of 90%, pointing out to how successfully Parikrma has integrated the Parents into the program.

Said Shukla Bose, CEO, Parikrma, "Motorola's donation is at the heart of what Parikrma stands for - quality education and integration of the slum communities with our program. We thank them for it. The Library donation will allow us to build a high quality resource centre that will provide the children with cutting edge knowledge, something we strongly believe will help these children compete on equal terms. The three wheeler donation gave us the perfect opportunity to integrate slum community into Parikrma by hiring a driver from within that community".
