Proactive Parents

There has been a steady increase in the involvement of parents. Most parents regularly attend PTA meetings, annual days and sports days, often providing much needed assistance during these functions. But the parents were not always this attentive to their child’s school needs. Most fathers were gripped by alcohol addiction and mothers burdened with family responsibilities. Parikrma now has a Best Parents of the Year award for the most involved and transformed parents. One such case was that of Sangeetha’s parents Yellappa and Uma.

Sangeetha’s family of six was supported by her maternal grandfather. Her father Yellappa was a severe alcoholic, had no job and had a bad reputation in the community. On hearing about Parikrma’s de-addiction support to the family, her mother Uma pleaded for an intervention. Yellappa was taken to NIMHANS hospital where he was told that his chronic drinking had left him in a critical condition. Uma didn’t give up hope. She ensured that he took the proper medication regularly, and Parikrma followed-up with them frequently. In three months, Yellappa’s liver recovered extraordinarily. He is completely de-addicted. He has become a new person and his attitude to life has been transformed. Both the father and mother share their responsibilities equally. Sangeetha is always on time to school, regular with her homework and neatly dressed. Both the parents attend the PTA meetings regularly and are always punctual. Some specific programs are described below:

Vocational Training for older siblings

For older siblings of Parikrma children that are not in school, Parikrma has tied up with the not for profit organization Unnati to train them to acquire professional skills. These will be applied as resources in the garment industry and in supermarkets. Devraj, trained as a computerized billing resource earns a monthly salary of Rs. 5000. In total, in an effort that began 3 years ago, Unnati and Parikrma have placed 60 young workers

Soybean Nutrition Project

The University Of Illinois has been, since January 2007, sponsoring Parikrma’s ambitious Soybean Research Project. The daily breakfast and Protein Malt (raagi, wheat, jowar, ground nuts) given to our students is enhanced with soybean granules, which is a rich source of vital nutrients. We don’t just provide the children with lunch but also ensure they get 80% of their nutritional requirement when in school.
